A Javanese Gamelan Performance by Sari Raras


 
Here is how a Javanese gamelan ensemble sounds like. This clip also features a lot of close-up views of the musicians, allowing us some insight on how some of the instruments are actually played.
 
For the saron instruments (i.e. the metallophones), you will notice that while the musicians are striking a key with one hand, they use their other hand to grip the key they struck previously. This is called damping the key. If they simply strike the keys without damping at all, you will end up hearing all the different keys simultaneously, and you won't be able to hear the melody at all.
